10dB Acoustics (previously called Activ Acoustics) was formed in 1996 by Gordon Brown, and his wife, Alison, who provides administrative and computer services. Gordon’s background is that he is a former Environmental Health Officer who has specialised in Pollution Control, primarily dealing with acoustics and noise control. A corporate member of both the Institute of Acoustics and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Gordon holds the Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control of the Institute of Acoustics. Following the examinations for the Diploma, he was awarded the Salex Trophy (presented and sponsored by the Salex Group, Colchester) for outstanding examination results.

Whilst 10dB Acoustics have extensive and broad experience of the investigation and resolution of a wide variety of noise problems, there are areas in which Gordon has specialist knowledge and interest. The study of firearms noise has long been a particular interest, if for no other reason than he is an active shooter in his spare time. In November 1997 Gordon presented a paper to the Institute of Acoustics Autumn Conference on the forthcoming Code of Practive on Clay Target Shooting and continues to carry out research work in this area. Other areas in which 10dB Acoustics has particular experience include:-

Planning & Local Authority related issues - as might be expected of a former local authority officer, Gordon has had considerable experience in planning and nuisance issues, which enables the company to bring a unique perspective to the assessment of these matters. Gordon is also a consultant lecturer at Colchester Professional Training Centre and regularly delivers courses on Planning & Pollution Control. It is critical to be able to understand the local authority view in order to present a cogent, well reasoned argument to them - or to see that their case is so strong, that to fight it would be futile. It is our policy not to take on cases where there is no realistic chance of success. If we think you’d be wasting your money, you’ll be told - and there’s no charge for that service! Examples of contracts carried out in this field include:-

Presentation of evidence at public enquiries
Review of third party proofs of evidence for Local Authorities
Noise impact assessments of planning applications
PPG24 Noise Exposure Category determination for residential developments

Noise at Work - Gordon has recently been appointed as Course Tutor for the IoA Certificate of Competence in Workplace Noise Assessment at Colchester and has considerable experience in practical assessment of noise at work Examples of assessments carried out include:-Assessment for major motor vehicle manufacturer
